It is necessary to sit comfortably while peening. The right anvil height enables one to support the scythe with left or right knee. The scythe will be more stable. As opposed to using a log chuck, it is much more convenient to peen on the peening bench. You can easilly move and turn it based on current lighting conditions to see each of your hammer blows.

This bench is hand made using traditional joinery techniques. The metal ring prevents the front column from splitting.

Directions:

Stick the peening anvil or peening jig body into the pre-drilled hole. Adjust the hole with drill bit if necessary. Approximately 2/3 of the anvil stem should slide freely into the hole. Use wooden mallet or metal hammer with piece of wood as a protection to hammer the anvil all the way down. You may want to turn the anvil slightly toward the side where you hold the hammer while peening. It will be difficult to change the angle afterwards, so be careful to do it right the first time. Sit on the bench with your lower legs perpendicular to the ground. Place the scythe on both of your knees. The scythe should be at least 1 cm higher than the top of the anvil. If it is lower, measure by how much and shorten the legs and the bottom part of the front post accordingly. You can always bend or straighten your legs to lower the supported scythe.
