Scythe Austrian Fux Hartstahl
Great Austrian hand forged scythe from traditional manufacturer Franz de Paul Schroeckenfux (Fux Austria, Schröckenfux). Choose blade length from 60, 65, 70, 75, 80, 85 or 90 cm. The scythe holds its edge sharpness and it is malleable at the same time. Which means that it can be hand peened to produce fine edge. It is durable and still very light. Produced with tradition since 1540, it perfectly suits the needs for modern ergonomic mowing.
Geometry of this scythe allows for ergonomic mowing in diverse conditions. It is slightly bent in both longitudinal and lateral axes. Longitudinal bend prevents sticking the point to the ground. The scythe smoothly glides even through uneven terrain without the need to lift it from the ground.
Lateral bend enables cutting of the grass stems with minimal friction and prevents the edge from dulling fast.
The mower can comfortably control how much of grass he will cut in one back and forth swing. This scythe allows for truly meditative mowing.
The traditional forging technology gives the scythe rigidity, durability while keeping the weight down. This scythe has a potential to last for multiple generations of mowers.
Produced from quality steel, it manifests great balance between hardness and malleability. It holds its sharp edge very well and at the same time it allows to peen it without cracking of the material.
During our mowing practice and running of mowing courses, we had an opportunity to try many different scythes. This one was chosen by us as the best the world has to offer. We intentionally abstain from offering variety of regional models to avoid confusion. Different mowing techniques were used in different regions. The ergonomic mowing technique surpasses most by comfort and effectiveness. The Fux Hartstahl is the best choice for ergonomic mowing, that will suit the needs of 99% of mowers.
Here is how to pick the right size length for your specific needs:
- Short scythe (60 - 70 cm) is great for mowing in cramped spaces. Short scythe does not require much strength, which suits physically weaker mower. Poorly maintained land with hard plants is easier to mow with the short scythe.
- Medium sized scythe (65 - 75 cm) is universal: suitable for gardens, orchards or meadows. Again, you have to consider mower's abilities.
- Long scythe (75 - 90 cm) is great for cutting large and relatively flat land. Mowing is faster, but requires more strength.
Although the new scythe is marked as "Ready to mow" (Mähfertig) from the factory, it really is not so. For easy ergonomic mowing it has to be peened first. If you choose the Condition to be "Hand peened", you will receive a scythe with paint removed along the edge, grinded on a water cooled grinder for consistent thickness and hand peened in at least 3 passes.
