This is how a comfortable mowing stance looks like.
The right hand could be extended even more (to relax your biceps).
Here is how you can reliably identify your snath size:
Hold a stick (e.g. a pencil) in your fist. Stand on a level floor, feet somewhat wider apart than shoulder width. Both shoulders are relaxed with arms freely hanging down. Hold the stick level with the ground and have someone measure how high from the ground the stick is (the lower side of the stick). Measure perpendicular to the ground. This corresponds to the lower handle height while mowing.
In the table below, look up the range (ranges) into which your measurement falls. Pick the corresponding snath size. Note that these measurements work when using our Austrian scythes. Other scythes (even from the same factory) may have different tang angles and the specified ranges would differ.
(Example: With Markéta on the picture we measured 76 cm. Both snaths L and XL would work. We would recommend her to use the L-size snath because it is cheaper and lighter :-)

78 – 89 cm. If your measurement reads above 95, it is still possible to mow with a straight back by holding the snath steeper to the ground. You will have to cut off a small wedge from the snath shaft to achieve the proper angle for the scythe blade. |
